Great idea: an early summer family holiday in our holiday flat!

Our holiday apartment in Bayreuth

Whether it's a long weekend in May, the Whitsun holidays or (depending on the federal state) in June: when Bavaria's long holidays are still a long way off, early summer family holidays are in high season – at least here in Bayreuth. Early summer is the ideal time to explore the city and its surroundings at a leisurely pace: distances are short, tourist attractions are not yet overcrowded, the hustle and bustle of the festival season is still far away, and temperatures are perfect for active days outdoors.

Prime location: our holiday flat in Bayreuth

Our family-friendly holiday apartment in the Lohmühle hotel restaurant is the perfect base for this: close to the centre, in a quiet location and with the excellent cuisine of the Lohmühle right on the doorstep.

Everything within walking distance: family moments of happiness on holiday in the heart of Bayreuth

Even without a car, there is plenty to experience from our holiday flat during this time. A short walk takes you to the historic Hofgarten in just a few minutes – with old trees, wide paths for buggies or balance bikes and plenty of space to play and breathe deeply. Just a little further on, the Hermitage beckons with water features, grottos and parkland, which is particularly atmospheric in early summer.

A highlight for children is the Röhrensee Zoo with its large playground, water area and boat hire: watching animals, romping around, enjoying an ice cream in between – an entire day's holiday can easily be filled here. The modern Wilhelminenaue with climbing and play facilities ideally complements the programme.

In the evening, it's back to the holiday flat – and if you like, you can fortify yourself beforehand in our restaurant with Franconian classics or light summer specialities.

For days of water fun and relaxation: thermal baths, lakes and outdoor pools

Early summer is the perfect time to enjoy a mix of activity and relaxation. For families, for example, a trip to the Trebgaster Badeweiher lake, around 20 km away, or to the Obernsees thermal baths is ideal. The latter boasts a large indoor and outdoor area, slides, whirlpools and warm pools, as well as a separate wellness area – here, little water lovers get their money's worth, as do parents in need of relaxation.

Those who prefer something a little quieter and more wellness-oriented can take older children (the youngest under 6 are not allowed in for safety reasons) to the Lohengrin Therme just outside Bayreuth – ideal when the weather is not quite so good. And as soon as the temperatures really start to rise, the region's outdoor pools also beckon, especially the Kreuzsteinbad with its spacious sunbathing lawns and children's area.

For small big adventures: Franconian Switzerland & Fichtel Mountains

A real outdoor paradise awaits within a radius of around 30 kilometres around Bayreuth. In Franconian Switzerland, for example, the stalactite caves near Pottenstein and Streitberg are perennial favourites with families: child-friendly guided tours, exciting rock formations and the mild cave climate all year round make them perfect destinations in early summer.

Action and nature experiences await in the Fichtelgebirge mountains: at Ochsenkopf, many families combine the summer toboggan run/alpine coaster with a detour to the climbing forest – the programme can be easily tailored to the age of the children. Around Lake Fichtelsee, barrier-free paths, playgrounds and swimming opportunities offer a relaxing contrast.

Good to know: many tours can be combined with easy hikes that are also feasible for ‘short legs’.

When the weather changes: culture and indoor experiences

Even on days when it's chilly or rainy, your family holiday doesn't have to be a washout. The Upper Franconia Primeval World Museum, the Margravial Opera House (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the New Palace in Bayreuth bring history and nature to life – often with child-friendly activities. And a stroll through town with a short shopping break, a stop at a café and a trip to the playground is also fun in mixed weather – especially since the way back to the Lohmühle holiday apartment is never far.

Why early summer is ideal

Before the festival season begins at the end of July and Bayreuth becomes an international stage, the city shows its relaxed side: tourist attractions are usually less crowded, waiting times are short, and you can still get tickets and seats spontaneously in many places. For families with school-age children who, depending on the federal state, can also take advantage of holidays in May, June or early July, this is a real advantage – as are the often more attractive conditions compared to the high season.
