What is special about Wilhelmine of Bayreuth
The Prussian princess Wilhelmine, born in 1709, was not only the favorite sister of Frederick the Great and the wife of Prince Frederick III of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, but above all, she was a talented author and composer as well as a particularly passionate promoter of the arts and sciences. She was an exceptionally educated woman who was enthusiastic about philosophy, literature, music, and architecture – and among other things, she also planned and realized a significant part of the baroque buildings, parks, and gardens that still shape the city of Bayreuth today. Under her aegis, Bayreuth experienced a cultural flourishing that is still admired today.
An overview of the most important buildings and garden facilities she initiated or realized in and around Bayreuth can be found on the special website “Stage free for Wilhelmine and the Margraves.”
A brief overview of her life has been compiled by the Bavarian Palace Administration under the title “Margravine Wilhelmine.”

Das Besondere an Wilhelmine von Bayreuth
Die preußische Königstochter Wilhelmine, geboren im Jahr 1709, war nicht nur die Lieblingsschwester von Friedrich dem Großen und Ehefrau des Fürsten Friedrich III. von Brandenburg-Bayreuth, sondern vor allem eine talentierte Autorin und Komponistin sowie eine besonders leidenschaftliche Förderin der Künste und Wissenschaften. Sie war eine überdurchschnittlich gebildete Frau, die sich für Philosophie, Literatur, Musik und Architektur begeisterte – und unter anderem auch einen maßgeblichen Teil der die Stadt auch heute noch prägenden barocken Bauten, Parks und Gärten Bayreuths (mit) plante und realisierte. Unter ihrer Ägide erlebte Bayreuth eine kulturelle Blütezeit, die bis heute bewundert wird.
